Body: Square, compact, and well-balanced with a short, straight back, broad, deep chest, and slightly rounded loins.

The Japanese Chin's (also known as the Japanese Spaniel) coat is long, straight and silky, and requires brushing a few times a week. While they may appear "cat-like" in nature they will adapt themselves to the family environment in which they live.

The Japanese Spaniel is a dainty, fine-boned breed with a square shape. It has a short muzzle and wide nostrils. Its wide-set, protruding eyes are almond-shaped and dark with a touch of white, giving the impression of surprise.

Japanese Chins stand about 20 to 27 cm (8 to 11 in) in height at the withers and weigh 2 to 5 kg (4 to 11 lb).

The Japanese Chin (also known as the Japanese Spaniel) is an old breed which has existed for at least 1000 years, possibly much longer, and its distant ancestor is believed to be the Tibetan Spaniel.

The Japanese Chin can be called the Chin as well as Japanese Spaniel. It can be a little spaniel whose only bred purpose is always to serve man as any companion. The Chin is known for a large broad head, great wide-set eyes, and a brief Broad muzzle.

There are two theories on the origin of the Japanese Chin or Japanese Spaniel.
