The Japanese Spitz shares a common ancestry with the Nordic Spitz. It is about half the size of the Samoyed, and is also closely related to the German Spitz and Pomeranian.

Description: The Ainu is a Japanese spitz breed that is rarely seen outside of Japan. The name is derived from the tribe of Ainu that existed in Japan for thousands of years who lived on the northern most Japanese island of Hokkaido.

This breed is similar to other Japanese spitz-type working dogs, with a wedge-shaped head, double coat and prick ears, but falls between the Shiba Inu and the Akita in size and coat length.

The Japanese spitz probably descended from this early Pomeranian and bears a striking resemblance to it as well. The breed was recognized by the English Kennel Club in 1870.

In fact, the Japanese spitz closely resembles these early Pomeranians and very likely descends from them.
