The breed is thought to be the most ancient and purest bred dogs hailing from Japan where it was developed in the isolated district of Kai. It was used primarily as a hunting dog for deer and wild boar.

Kai Ken Dogs
The Kai Ken is a wonderful family pet. It is affectionate and playful with family members, showing extra care and sensitivity around children. Very intelligent, it is easy to train and generally gets along well with other dogs.

The Kai Dog originated in Honshu, an island located in the province of Kai in Japan. It was originally utilized as a hunter of deer and wild boar. It is relatively rare and hard to obtain.

Temperament: Kai Kens are a more one-person dog. They are courageous and brave as hunters, and will be loyal to their owners. They have a strong prey drive, and will hunt small animals.

History
The Shiba Inu originated in Japan along with the Akita, Shikoku, Kai Dog, Hokkaido and Kishu, all of which are larger than the Shiba Inu. The Shiba Inu was used primarily as a hunting dog to flush out small game and birds for hunters.
