The breed is a hunting dog native to Northern Russia and Russian Siberia, also the title Karelo-finnish Laika refers to a generic name for many breeds.

KARELO-FINNISH LAIKA is not a common breed. Very few species of this breed still exist. It is faced with extinction unlike other breeds.
KARST SHEEPDOG takes the name from its role. It is a guardian of sheep flocks.
