Keeshond History
The Keeshond is part of the family of spitz dogs. However, its particular origins are unknown. Since the eighteenth century, this breed seems to have been well recognized in Holland as a companion and watchdog.

The Keeshond (pronounced ‘Kazehawnd'; plural Keeshonden) is a member of the northern Spitz family of dogs which evolved in the Arctic regions.

First descended from the arctic strains, the Keeshond was particularly popular in Holland as the Dutch Patriot Political party breed. This medium sized dog stands at 16 to 19 inches tall and weighs 35 to 66 pounds.

(ks´hnd) (pl. Keeshonden), breed of medium-sized nonsporting dog raised in Holland for several hundred years and introduced into England in the year 1900. It stands about 18 in.
Keeshonden were developed in The Netherlands where they were used to guard canal boats and became known as ‘Dutch Barge Dogs'. A larger variety of the Kees was also developed and is known as the ‘Wolfkeeshond'.

The Keeshond, during the 18th century was fondly called the “dog of the people'. It is related to the Chow Chow, Pomeranian and other dog breeds. After the French Revolution, this breed’s popularity started to wane.

Coat: The Keeshond has a plush, abundant double coat. The outer coat is long, straight, and harsh. The under coat is soft and downy in texture. The coat is extremely thick around the neck, shoulders, and chest.
Temperament: Keeshonds are independent, affectionate and alert. They make good watchdogs. They are self willed, and need proper training and firm but positive instruction to ensure compliance. They are friendly with everyone, fun loving and happy.

The breed served for countless years on small vessels called rijnaken, that were found in great numbers on the Rhine River.

It is very important to brush the keeshond’s coat daily. First, brush with the grain then as you comb, lift the hair and brush against the grain and then lay it back in place. Bathe only when necessary.

The origin of the Keeshond is the Netherlands. The Keeshond (pronounced caze-hawnd) is best known as the Dutch Barge Dog, having come to prominence guarding the barges traveling up and down the canals of Holland.

The Keeshond is a small breed known for its interesting coloration. The Keeshond has chestnut eyes, erect ears that are triangular and a tail that rolls over the back. They usually have a look of alertness.

However, the American Eskimo Dog is one of the Spitz family of Nordic breeds, and is possibly related to the White German Spitz, Samoyed and White Keeshond.
The Mittel German Spitz is descended from very old Spitz dogs who can be dated back to the Stone Age, and is related to both Keeshonds and Pomeranians.
