Kelpies stand between 17 and 23 inches (43-58.5 cm) at the withers and generally weigh from 24 to 45 lbs (11 to 30 kg).

Kelpies are athletic with muscular shoulders and a strong hindquarter. The head is slightly rounded and broad between the eyes.

Kelpies are very agile: Working Kelpies are renowned for running along the backs of sheep when moving them through chutes. Show Kelpies generally excel in agility trials.

The Kelpie race is based on these beginnings, with crossings throughout the years with other lines. The race is in English essence, without introduction of the Dingo.

History: Developed in Australia, Australian Kelpies are descended from the Collie and some believe, the Dingo. They were the result of a cross between a Collie from the north of England and a black and tan female from New South Wales, Australia.

Other breeders crossed their Heelers with other breeds, including the Bull Terrier, Dalmatian and, later, black-and-tan Kelpie, a sheep-herding breed.

In 1840, new blood was introduced, including that of the extinct Smithfield, the native Dingo, the Kelpie, the Dalmatian, and the blue merle Smooth Collie.

Polish Lowland Sheepdogs are a mid-sized dog roughly similar in size to herding dogs such as Kelpies and Cattle Dogs. They typically stand at around 52cm at the shoulder, and have a short and stocky body with a broad back and large head.
