The breed originated in Ireland during the 1500s as a large game hunter, while its appearance most likely suggests the Kerry Beagle descended from the bloodhound.

Description: The origin of the Kerry Beagle description as "beagle" is unknown, as the Kerry Bealge was never a small dog like the familiar Beagle.

KERRY BEAGLE is also among the most rare dog breeds. It has strange but good-looking body features making it good as a pet for pet lovers.

It is not known why the black and tan Kerry Beagle, present in Ireland since Celtic times, has the beagle description, since at 22 to 24 inches (56 to 61 cm) it is significantly taller than the modern day Beagle, and in earlier times was even larger.

The Beagle owes its ancestry to the Foxhound, the Harrier and a small bloodhound, known as a 'Kerry Beagle.' At first, Beagles came in a variety of sizes and coat types - including the modern, smooth hound coat and also a harsh, wiry coat.
