The breed took on the name of its origins in the mountainous districts of Kishu, where they were used primarily as a boar hunter. The generally white, medium-sized Kishu stand 17 to 22 inches tall and weigh 30 to 60 pounds.

The Kishu Ken is considered as a national treasure by its home country, Japan, so they are seldom exported which makes this breed rare and difficult to acquire. They are well renowned for their natural hunting and herding abilities.

The Kishu inu differs from the Hokkaido inu by his more lenghty body.
Initially, their coats were often marked with conspicuous colors such as red, sesame or brindle.

Temperament: Kishu Kens are a more one-person dog. They are courageous and brave as hunters, and will be loyal to their owners. They have a strong prey drive, and will hunt small animals.

Kishu Inu - This is another Spitz-type dog from the mountains of Kishu that was originally bred to hunt boars. Today's Kishu comes in solid colors, and white dogs are the most common.

They are the Akita (large size); Kishu, Hokkaido, Shikoku, Kai (medium size); and the Shiba (small size). The small sized dog has been called the Shiba since ancient times, and there are several theories surrounding the development of that name.

He is one of Japan's six native breeds: Akita (large), Kishu, Hokkaido, Kai, Shikoku (medium), and Shiba (small). He is known for his spirited personality, small upright ears, and cat-like agility.

The Shikoku Dog is a Japanese dog, designated as a precious natural object, like the Akita Dog and Kishu Dog.

The big guys are the Akitas; the middle group includes Kishu, Hokkaido, Shikoku, and Kai, all extremely rare in the US. The smallest of the six, the Shiba yields nothing in courage or tenacity to his larger cousins.

The Shikoku belongs to the Shika-inus, the medium-sized dogs. Other medium-sized dogs are the Kai Inu, the Ainou and the Kishu Inu. They are all very similar with overlapping colors and only minor differences in size and morphology.
