Another breed very similar to the Samoyed was named the Nenets Laika, named after the Nentsy tribe. They were used as a herd and guard dog responsible for keeping masses of reindeer together.

Still others claim that this breed is related to the Russian Laika. The Finnish spitz breed remained pure due to its isolation until the early 1800s when other groups brought dogs to the area and interbreeding became common.

The Karelian resembles the Laika, with its distinctive black and white coat, so unlike that of most Spitz-type dogs.

Related to the Russian Laika, the breed originated in the eastern area of Finland. It was introduced to and pioneered in Britain in the 1,920s by the late Lady Kitty Ritson, who is responsible for the breed's nickname of Finkie.

The Karelian Bear Dog originated in Russia and is one of the so-called "Laika dogs," but these dogs have erect ears and a curly tail (Stefán A?alsteinsson 2005:9; Stefán A?alsteinsson 2004:26).

There it was bred by nobility, who crossed it with the Russian Laika to give it a longer, thicker coat. The breed was so prized that its sale was not allowed for centuries. The only way to obtain one was to receive it as a gift from the Tsar.
