The original Lapphunds, or Lapponian Herders, were first brought to Finland in the 1930s. They were later bred with the Karelian Bear Dog, and later the Finnish Kennel Club decided to separate the breeds.

It is described by the Lapps as a galloping dog and works alongside the Lapponian Herder, a trotting dog. Between them the two breeds are said to work the herds ideally, their styles perfectly complementing each other.
