About The Large Munsterlander Most people now believe the Large Munsterlander has its origins in a very old breed known as the German Longhair.
While officially recorded as one of the newest pointing and retrieving gundog breeds, the Large Munsterlander has been well established in its native Germany as an all-purpose gundog since the beginning of the 18th century.
Of these are the Drentse Patrijshond, Kooikerhondje, German Longhaired Pointer, Large Munsterlander, and of course the Small Munsterlander. The breed has been described as he is today in the 1800s.
The Large Munsterlander is from the same area, but was developed from different breeding stock and is not as closely related as the names would suggest. SMPs bear a resemblance to both spaniels and setters but are more versatile.
