During the 19th century and World War II, many different breeds were mixed to create a dog under 20 inches that could be legally used in hunting in the Latvian countries since breeds over 20 inches were illegal.

LATVIAN HOUND is popular for its excellence in swimming. It can go past a long stretch of water mass. This is why it thrives more around large water body masses, for instance lakes.

The Lithuanian Hound is an attempt to recreate the original-type Curlandish Hounds, which were associated at one time with the Latvian Hound. In the 1970 the Lithuanian Hound was low in numbers.
