Originating in Tibet and being introduced into the west in the 1930's, the Shih Tzu's (pronounced Shid Zoo) forebears are Pug, Pekinese and Lhasa Apso. Shih Tzu means "Lion Dog".

Others, however, like the Poodle and Lhasa Apso, have quite a large following. The breeds in the Non-Sporting Group are a varied collection in terms of size, coat, personality and overall appearance.

They also know that it occurs in certain breeds of dogs, notably Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, Shih Tzus, Lhasa Apsos, Toy Poodles, and Yorkshire Terriers. Because of that, vets suspect that there is a genetic factor involved.
