The Pekingese or "Lion Dog' seems to date back to the 9th century in China. Ownership of the Peke was restricted to members of the Chinese Imperial Court and they were considered sacred by the Chinese Tang dynasty.

Shih Tzu (or more properly, Shih Tzu Kou) means "lion dog," designating the breed as one of the most esteemed animals in China because of its association with Buddhism.
Also known as the Little Lion Dog the Lowchen (pronounced lerv-chun) is an old breed believed to be descended from Tibetan dogs.
The name Lowchen means Little Lion Dog or Le Petit Chien Lion in French. It has origins connected to the Bichon family, including the Bichon Frise and Havenese and several others.
The 'lion dogs' were so successful that they soon became popular, their distinctive ridge becoming a trademark of quality.
The breeding of these “lion dogs' was a principal concern, and the resulting dogs were treated as royalty and continually pampered. They even had their own servants.
Chow Chow, or Chow is a breed of dog more than 2,000 years old and originating from China, where it is referred to as Songshi Quan which literally means "puffy-lion dog" and Tang Quan, meaning "Dog of the Tang Empire".
They were the Lion dog, the Pekinese and the Lo-sze. The Lo-sze or "Foo Dog" was the ancient Pug. The name comes from the Latin word pugnus, meaning "fist," a reference to the shape of the dog's face.
The Shih Tzu, whose Chinese name means "lion dog," is generally thought to have originated in western China. It resembles a Lhasa Apso except for its shortened face, and could be the result of crossing the Lhasa Apso and the Pekingese.
The earliest known record of the Lion Dog is traceable to the Tang Dynasty of the 8th century. Breeding of these little dogs, now called Pekingese, reached a zenith during the Tao Kuang period (1821-1851).
The Little Lion Dog undoubtedly evolved from the family of Bichons, as they travelled from the Mediterranean into Europe. Many feel that the breed was developed in Germany, but France is listed as the official country of development.
Bred as a companion for at least 2,000 years, this little "lion dog" is happy and outgoing, with a friendly, trusting attitude beneath the slightly arrogant appearance.
The Imperial Shih Tzu or Shih Tzu breed or lion dog is characterized by its long, flowing double coat; sturdy build; intelligence; and a friendly, lively attitude. In breeding all coat colors are allowed.
The Shih Tzu, whose name means "Lion Dog" in Chinese, can be traced back to images and paintings that date to the 7th century. He is descended from the oldest and smallest of Tibetan holy dogs, and was a favored court dog during the Ming Dynasty.

The little lion dog is seen in many art pieces featuring dogs as far back as the 1500s, but it is unclear whether these were all dogs like the Löwchen, or simply small dogs of the Bichon type that were trimmed in a lion cut.
Their puppies would enter the show ring as "Maltese Terriers", and in 1877 they would be shown in America as "Maltese Lion Dogs". The lion reference was most likely because of their appearance in the ring.

In 1643 the Dalai Lama sent a gift to the ruler of the Manchu dynasty little "lion dogs" shih-tzu. Since they were highly revered in the court of Chinese emperors, shih-tzu were unknown in Europe until 1908.
