The Lowchen, or "Little Lion Dog" is a good apartment dogs who is good with children and other pets. They will fall in pace with your lifestyle, but do enjoy a nice walk. They try to be the dominant dog in spite of their physical stature.

Also known as the Little Lion Dog the Lowchen (pronounced lerv-chun) is an old breed believed to be descended from Tibetan dogs.

The name Lowchen means Little Lion Dog or Le Petit Chien Lion in French. It has origins connected to the Bichon family, including the Bichon Frise and Havenese and several others.

Lowchen (pronounced lerv-chun) means 'little lion dog', and in France the breed is know as le petit chien lion. The Lowchen shares common roots with other members of the Bichon family, which includes the Bichon Frise and Havanese, among others.

The löwchen, which means “little lion dog,' is pronounced lerv-chun. Many countries lay claim to this unique breed, including Germany, Russia, and Spain; however many people agree that France was its country of origin.

The Lowchen is also known as the Little Lion Dog because it was traditionally given a lion clip, similar to that sported by the exhibition poodle. Complete with mane and tufted tail, the Lowchen does look like a lion in miniature.

The Little Lion Dog undoubtedly evolved from the family of Bichons, as they travelled from the Mediterranean into Europe. Many feel that the breed was developed in Germany, but France is listed as the official country of development.

The Lowchen breed has been known as the Little Lion Dog or Petite Chien Lion. It is a small compact dog with a well proportioned body.

Description: The Lowchen or Little Lion Dog is a member of the Bichon group. He has a long, silky coat trimmed in the traditional "lion clip". A spunky, high spirited dog he is also happy to just curl up in your lap.

It belongs to numerous kinds of dog breeds like Bichon Bolognese, Little Lion Dog, Bichon Frise and Maltese. They are a bit square in shape and can be recommended to people who have allergies because they don’t have any odor.

The little lion dog is seen in many art pieces featuring dogs as far back as the 1500s, but it is unclear whether these were all dogs like the Löwchen, or simply small dogs of the Bichon type that were trimmed in a lion cut.

During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Chinese royal families kept Shih Tzu-type dogs, and the "little lion dogs" or "chrysanthemum-faced" dogs were mentioned in several documents from that period.
