Llewellin Setters are believed to be a pure descendent of the English Setter dog. The first Llewellin Settelrs were primarily Blue Beltons, which was a common color among English Setters at one time.

The English Setter is a sporting breed known for its endurance. They are most commonly used as bird dogs.

The name Llewellin Setter is given to a certain strain of English Setters bred by R.L. Purcell Llewellin (also spelled Llewellyn) to be perfect for field trials.

Descended from a variety of Spanish spaniels and pointers, they have also been known as the Laverack Setter or Llewellin Setters.

At about this time, the Llewellin Setter was bred using blood lines from the Lavarack breeding of English Setter and, among other breeds, bloodlines from native Irish Setters.

These are often called "Llewellin Setters." The English Setter is energetic and swift. It is a breed of quiet workers with a very efficient sense of smelling.

Their creation was known as the Llewellin Setter. This is not a separate breed but did have separate bloodlines. In time they had the perfect breed developed, with the first one being shown in the Newcastle upon Tyne.

The Laverack and Llewellin setters diverged, with the Laverack providing the foundation for the show setters and the Llewellin forming the foundation for the field setters. Both types have enjoyed steady popularity in America.
