Mange in Dogs: An Overview
Mange is a skin disease of domestic dogs caused by one of several different species of parasitic mites.

Mange is an irritation of the skin, primarily resulting in hair loss and sometimes including itching and inflammation, all of which are caused by microscopic mites.

Mange is a parasitic skin disease caused by microscopic mites. Two different mange mites cause skin disease in dogs. One lives just under the surface of the skin, while the other resides deep in the hair follicles.

Some mange mites live in your dog's skin and hair follicles, causing no problems. If they reproduce and spread, they cause mild to severe skin disease. Sarcoptic mange is highly contagious, transferred between both animal and human hosts.

Demodectic mange is not an inherited condition, but the suppressed immune system that allows the puppy to be susceptible to the mites can be.

Mange in Dogs
Mange (demodicosis) is an inflammatory disease in dogs caused by various types of the Demodex mite.

Demodectic Mange
Cause is a microscopic mite. In puppies, the first sign is usually hair loss around the eyes and mouth. The symptoms often fade as the puppies' immune systems mature and are able to resist the mites.

Demodectic mange is also a problem in the breed. Although most dogs normally carry a complement of demodex mites, a few breeds appear to be susceptible to severe infestations that cause hair loss and skin sores.

Demodectic mange, also called demodicosis, can be localized or generalized. In the localized form, patches of red, scaly skin with hair loss appears on the head, neck and forelegs. It's thought of as a puppy disease, and often clears up on its own.

Demodectic Mange
The mite, Demodex canis, starts off as small dry areas on the head, chest, and legs of the Shar-Pei. Because the dog scratches to relieve the intense itching, the skin becomes red and raw with a leathery look about it.
