Maremma sheepdogs are very brave and protective. Thus, they are highly effective in guarding sheep. They can even slay or ward off wolves despite their size which is smaller than other sheep dogs. They will do anything to protect their owners.
Maremmas are very intelligent and learn easily. Their protective nature makes them extremely focused. After spotting something interesting out the window, they are content to remain and watch for a very long time.

The Maremma Sheepdog has two names in its native Italy because for centuries the shepherd dogs spent from June until October in the Abruzzi, where there was good summer grazing, and from October until June in the Maremma.

It is the probable ancestor of the Tibetan Mastiff, Samoyed, Anatolian Shepherd, Akbash, Maremma, Great Pyrenees and other breeds of Asiatic origin. The Kuvasz arrived with nomadic tribes in Hungary's Carpathian Basin about 896 AD.
The great Pyrenees is a descendant of the Hungarian Kuvasz and the Maremmano-Abruzzese. The breed is considered to be the aristocratic relative of the Newfoundland and the Saint Bernard.
and although the Pyrenees mountains of Europe are considered to be its native land its ancestors were problably the Hungarian Kuvasz, the Turkish Karabash, the Slovakian Kuvac and the Italian Maremmano-Abruzzese.
