Most likely a descendant of the English sheepdogs, the Maremma Sheepdog is a classic flock guarding dog. This well balanced flock guarder stands at 23 to 28 inches and weighs 66 to 100 pounds.

The Maremma Sheepdog is a large, graceful, white breed of dog, of a majestic, rustic appearance.

Maremma Sheepdogs can weigh from about 65 to 110 pounds (30-50 kg), and be from 23 to 29 inches tall (60-75 cm). They are strong, active, and for their size, very lithe.

Maremma sheepdogs are very brave and protective. Thus, they are highly effective in guarding sheep. They can even slay or ward off wolves despite their size which is smaller than other sheep dogs. They will do anything to protect their owners.

The Maremma Sheepdog has two names in its native Italy because for centuries the shepherd dogs spent from June until October in the Abruzzi, where there was good summer grazing, and from October until June in the Maremma.

Temperament: Maremma Sheepdogs are courageous, intelligent, sturdy and proud. They are independent and treat their owners as friends that are equal rather than the typical "human owns dog" relationship.

Ideal EnvironmentThe Maremma Sheepdog is not suited for apartment life. It needs at the very least a large yard, and with its all-weather coat can live outdoors in all seasons, provided it does not live in a very warm or humid climate.

Grooming the Maremma Sheepdog is fairly easy. Rough-coated Maremmas are not as prone to matting and tangling as the fine-coated versions, but both shed during the spring and fall.

An experienced Maremma Sheepdog will always show you how to handle the hockey stick and the puck. Rah-rah-rah!

Included in this Group are the livestock guardians such as the Maremma Sheepdog and the Pyrenean Mountain Dog.

In general they have less of a natural affinity to people, but make excellent watchdogs. Some examples are the Maremma Sheepdog and the Great Pyrenees. With good socialization and training, they can become very loyal to their owners.
