During the 18th century, the interest of bird hunting in Germany caused the breed to be developed from a smaller long-haired pointer.
Munsterlanders combine the best qualities of the setter and the spaniel, having the setter's build and the spaniel's head.
Munsterlanders, like most dog breeds, do not like being left alone for a very long time since they might become destructive. They are very gentle and affectionate towards their owners.
The smaller variety is of more recent origin, from the early 1900s; they are pointing dogs as setters arerather than flushers. The Small Munsterlander was the result of crosses of the German Longhair to Continental spaniels.
