Small Munsterlanders are very intelligent, trainable, and attentive but require gentle and patient training, which provides excellent results.

Munsterlanders combine the best qualities of the setter and the spaniel, having the setter's build and the spaniel's head.

Munsterlanders, like most dog breeds, do not like being left alone for a very long time since they might become destructive. They are very gentle and affectionate towards their owners.

Small Munsterlanders were little known, kept by a few families on farms around Munster. For a half century the few dogs that were bred were primarily companions, and used when hunting to feed the family rather than for sport.

The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon was bred by a female who was a Griffon of Barbet origins and crossed her with various Small Munsterlanders, Braque Francais and various setters and pointers.
