The Newfoundland Retriever, as it was called in the early 1800s, all but disappeared in Newfoundland because of a heavy tax placed upon dog owners. It wasn't long after that the word Labrador fully eclipsed that of Newfoundland.
One breeder of Newfoundlands noticed that one of her puppies had a tendency to carry things in her mouth, thus her name "Show Me". This trait is now seen not only in all of this bitch's puppies, but also into the third generation.
This dog is also held responsible for the formation of the Newfoundland dog which is said to be very gentle and also equally large in nature.
There is a story that says a ship was wrecked off the coast of Maryland in 1807 with two Newfoundland puppies. The puppies were given to the rescuers as a thank you. Both the dogs were mated to local dogs, never to each other.
