During the late 1980s, many heritage (not purebred) dogs were cross bred with the Siberan Husky, German Shepherd, and the Alaskan Malamute to create a dog that resembled a wolf but had domestic dog qualities.

The breed was initially known as the Northern Inuit but, because it had no relationship to the Canadian Inuit Dog, the name was changed to Utonagan.
