Old English Sheepdog, Bobtail, Bob, OES Breed Type This breed is a member of the herding dogs. These dogs were bred for herding cattle or sheep, which explains many of their characteristics. They are extremely active, intelligent, and driven to work.
OES are normally very smart. He may have come from an abused background or simply be a very independent dog. Smarter dogs are often more independent You may just have to find the right motivation for him Reply Speak Your Mind Cancel reply ...
OES have two different herding styles. Neither is more acceptable than the other. Some dogs are natural drivers, moving the stock away from the handler, while others are natural fetchers, taking the stock to the handler.
The OES is highly adaptable. To some people's surprise, he does well in an apartment if he is exercised regularly. In spite of his working heritage, he is not a good candidate for a backyard dog.
(Bobtail) (OES) (Bob)The Old English Sheepdog is unique looking breed with one interesting feature: their coat. The breed's round head looks like a puff ball.
OES can be protective but are hardly ever aggressive. They are alert, good with children and other dogs and animals. Old English Sheepdogs should be trained with a firm but positive hand, as they are a large and sometimes rambunctious breed.
With very few exceptions, the OES's tail is cut off at or below the first joint as puppies. The procedure, known as docking or "bobbing" the tail produces the panda-like rear end.
Although the modern OES is very similar to the early specimens, he has a more profuse coat and compact body. The breed's popularity as a pet grew slowly, until the 1970s when he became a favorite media animal.
The OES did this quite successfully and earned their place in the world of working dogs. During this time, farmers docked their tails to identify them as working dogs in order to get tax exemptions.
Its trademark is its beautiful, profuse coat, but the intelligent and agile Old English Sheepdog (OES) can easily complete any demanding task asked of him by a shepherd or drover.
The OES is a big lovable bear of a dog: Easygoing, doesn't shed but requires a weekly brushing. We have had two, our oldest is 13 and we are getting a new puppy. Love the breed.

The OES, or Bobtail, is a fair-sized dog and can have periods of stubbornness, so early and consistent training is a must. Their heavy, thick and long coat requires frequent brushing down to its undercoat. Expect heavy shedding in the spring.
If your preference is for an outdoor dog to be left pretty much to fend for itself, this is not the breed for you. The OES is a hardy, intelligent herding dog, which prefers to spend his time with his family.
Its popularity exploded, with pet owners wanting an exotic but lovable mop. Since that time, its numbers have gradually declined, but the OES still remains a well-known breed. It is now more often seen as a pet or show dog than as a working dog.
