Otter hound makes a splash at Greeley Kennel Club dog show

The Greeley Kennel Club all-breed dog show's best of show award Sunday went to Louie, a 6-year-old otter hound.

The Otterhound is a friendly, mellow and undemanding dog that is good with children but who may, unintentionally, bump smaller kids. They are good with other animals especially if raised with them.

The Otter hound was crossed with the now extinct Old English Black and Tan Terrier. This produced an intelligent all-round working dog, capable of hunting with the miners of the day and guarding the women and children when the men were at work.

Some examples are the Beagle, Bloodhound, Basset Hound, Coonhound, Dachshund, Fox Hound, Otter Hound, and Harrier.

These Newfoundlands were crossed with local retrievers and other breeds like the English Otter Hound, and the English or Irish Water Spaniel. The new breed was named after its birthplace.

In the mid-19th century, working class people created the Airedale Terrier by crossing the old English rough-coated Black and Tan Terrier which is now known as the Welsh Terrier with the Otter hound.

The hunting of otters with packs of dogs is documented from the 12th century onwards and King Edward II (1307-27) carried the title Master of Otter Hounds, ...

Other sources claim the breed descended from crosses with the English Otter hound, the flat-coated, and the curly-coated retriever.

Developed by breeding Newfoundland puppies with the English otter hound, flat-coat and curly-coated retriever
Used for its prowess in the rough, icy waters of the Chesapeake Bay, where it would retrieve up to 200 ducks in a day ...

When bred to local retrievers, including the English Otter Hound, Flat-Coat and Curly-Coated Retriever, the "Chessie" type developed.

Bred to hunt otters, the Airedale is thought to be descended from the otter hound and the Old English Black-and-Tan Terrier.

As the breed's name suggests, the otter was the dog's preferred prey.

Thus, otter hounds enjoyed a coinciding heyday in 19th century England. As a large dog with an impressively deep voice, an Otterhound can make a good watchdog, but their friendly nature makes them poor candidates as guard dogs.

They grew into first-rate retrievers and were eventually mixed with various Chesapeake-area dogs like the English Otter Hound and the Curly-Coated Retriever. Over time the distinctive, resourceful and water-resistant 'Chessie' evolved.
