Petit Brabancon: All colors allowed for the other standards. Until recently, black short may have been a fault, but it is now allowed in all standards. A black mask is expected on the red or reddish brown coat. Grey hair from age is not penalized.
It is believed that the stable griffon was bred with the pug in the late 1800s, which accounts for the unique shape of the head, called brachycephalic, and for the smooth-coated version of this breed, called the Petit Brabancon.
The pug crosses account for the brachycephalic head type and for the smooth-coated individuals of the breed, known then (and still in some countries) as the petit brabancon.
Towards the end of the 1800s, the mixture was crossed with the Pug, which gave it a broad head and also created the smooth coated Petit Brabancon breed. The Griffon breed was initially established enough to be shown in Belgium around 1880.

CARE REQUIREMENTS There are two distinct types of Griffon, the Griffon Bruxellois, the rough-coated variety with the whiskers and beard, and the smooth-coated Petit Brabancon.
There is the traditional Brussels Griffon with its long, wiry coat, the Belgian Griffon which has a slightly shorter coat and fringe around its face, and the Petit Brabancon with a short, smooth coat.
The Pug is accepted as having played its part also, particularly in the smooth-coated Griffon (the Petit Brabancon). The appealing features of the Griffon endeared it to the general public and saw it move from stable dog to house dog and companion.
