For many years, these dogs were called a Poltalloch Terrier. The modern name of the breed was suggested by Colonel Edward Donald Malcolm, who made an enormous contribution to it's development.

In the late 1800s, there was a strain of white Scottish Terriers owned by Colonel Malcolm of Poltalloch and known as Poltalloch Terriers.

The breed originated in Poltalloch, Scotland where it first earned that name Poltalloch Terrier, but upon coming to America the named was changed to West Highland White Terrier in 1909.

The West Highland White Terrier is said to originate from Poltalloch, Scotland, and due to this, was originally known as the Poltalloch Terrier. He was also sometimes referred to as the Roseneath Terrier, after the Duke of Argyll’s estate.

In 1907, the West Highland White Terrier was popular for the first time as the Poltalloch Terrier living with Col. E.D. Malcolm, who had bred short-legged white terriers in the past.

The West Highland White Terrier has been known by many names, including the Poltalloch Terrier and the Roseneath Terrier, but he was officially recognized by the Kennel Club of England as the West Highland White Terrier in 1906.

The Westie first gained attention in 1907 as the Poltalloch terrier, named for the home of Col. E.D. Malcolm, who had been breeding the short-legged white terriers for the previous 60 years.

The Westie was initially called the Poltalloch Terrier and also the Roseneath Terrier after the estate of the Duke of Argyll. Initially registered by the AKC as the Roseneath Terrier the name was changed to the West Highland White Terrier in 1909.
