Poodles: Everyone thinks a poodle is a show dog, and needs to be taken care of. Well, you do need to groom them, but they are extremely smart with a great temperament. They love kids and take care of them when around.

Poodles are extremely people-oriented dogs and, therefore, are eager to please. They are excellent watchdogs, but unlike some working breeds, don't usually become "one-person" dogs when they are part of a family.

Poodles make good companions and are extremely loyal, sometimes to the point of being possessive. The owner should be a competent trainer, as poodles can be willful if trained poorly.

Whether Poodles are present in their background is in dispute. Poodles were not present in England at the time the Curly was recognized (although they were present on the Continent, chiefly Germany and France).

The poodle (also called the barbone or caniche) is an elegant and highly intelligent dog. This lively dog has an amazingly springy gait.

Poodles can also be hard-working, and are used by French customs in inspections. But the Poodle breed also tends to be playful, which sometimes takes away a bit from their competitive spirit in sports.

The smaller poodles tend to be hyper. My miniature poodle, Mimi, has a great temperament - always willing to play, and ready to go to bed when I do.

Purebred toy and miniature breeds (Yorkshire terriers, toy poodles, Pomeranians) seem to be at significantly higher risk. Some family lines of German shepherds, Staffordshire bull terriers and Boxers also are predisposed.

The Irish Water Spaniel is thought to have developed through crosses with Poodles and Curly-coated Retrievers. Prior to 1859, there were two separate strains of the breed, one in the north and one in the south.

The smaller two breeds tend to be a little more active and toy poodles are sometimes high strung. The Standard Poodle does great with children and the smaller two breeds do best with well behaved children, particularly because of their size.

Some breeds of dogs, such as Poodles, commonly have problems. The anal sacs of obese dogs do not drain well, and thus these dogs are predisposed to recurrent problems.

Cafe Au Lait: Usually used to describe Poodles, this color is the typical color of the French coffee of the same name, which is about equal parts of coffee and milk. It may be described as rich, well-saturated light brown.

Poodles will do okay in an apartment or condominium dwelling provided they are sufficiently exercised and stimulated to help curtail their tendency to excessively bark, and to keep them physically fit.

The Non-Sporting Group contains dogs that don't quite fit anywhere else. The Boston Terrier and Standard Poodles are members of the Non-Sporting Group.
