Origin
Most authorities are in agreement that the Pug originated in China some 2,500 years ago. This supposition is supported by the evidence of ancient Chinese artefacts which depict small dogs which differ very little from today's Pug.

The Pug is one of the oldest living dog breeds, dating back to before 400 BC. The earliest known source of the Pug was in China, where they were kept among Buddhist monasteries.
PUG HEALTH:
Because they have extremely short snouts, some Pugs easily scratch their corneas, and can develop breathing problems. They are also prone to skin infections if the crevices in their faces are not kept clean.
Pug Upkeep
Like most dog breeds, the pug does require daily exercise. However, this doesn't have to be extreme physical exertion. Lively and active games typically do the trick or you can take your pug for a moderately paced walk while on a leash.

The pug has been known by many names: mopshond in Holland (which refers to his grumbling tendencies); mops in Germany, and Dutch or Chinese pug in England.
The Pug is a gentle, sensitive, happy, outgoing, playful, loyal and deeply loving dog. He wants to be near you, to sit at your feet, to sleep on the couch with you or follow you from room to room.
The Pug is thought to be of Chinese origin and many historians think its development pre-dated the Christian era. See our article on "The Year of the Dog" to learn about other dog breeds of Chinese origin.
The Pug has some health problems mostly because of how they were bred. These problems include extreme breathing problems caused by their short muzzle and ulcers on the cornea and inflammation of the cornea caused by their eyes bulging.
The pug has been referred to as 'Multo in Parvo,' which means 'a lot of dog in a small space.' In their little bodies, pugs packs a lot of love and boundless enthusiasm. This small, affectionate breed began as guard dogs in ancient Chinese temples.
