The Pyrenean Mountain Dog or Great Pyrenees Probably originated in Asia before finding its way With immigrants to Europe. Its closest relatives are the Kuvasz and the Newfoundland, to which it may have contributed.

The Great Pyrenees, also known as Pyrenean Mountain Dog, is, as its name suggests, a very large breed of dog. It is a very old breed. Remains of a dog similar to the Great Pyrenees have been discovered in Europe dating as far back as 1800 B.C.

It's ancestry includes the Newfoundland, St Bernard, and Pyrenean Mountain dog. They were used for companionship, rescuing and as water dogs. They faced extinction after WW I and WW II, but are out of that danger today.

Bernard multiple times and later crossed the offspring with a Pyrenean Mountain Dog. Over the years, it is now believed that other dog breed were crossed with early Leonbergers. However, no written records remain.
