The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a breed of dog from Southern Africa. The breed originated in Rhodesia (modern day Zimbabwe) where the first breed standard was written in 1922 and the Parent club formed by Francis R. Barnes in Bulawayo.

Rhodesian Ridgebacks generally will get along with other dogs just fine so long as they are females, but the males tend to start fights with other males. Cats should be fine in the household if the Ridgeback has grown up along side them as a puppy.

Rhodesian Ridgebacks need lots of exercise and do best with a large yard. Two runs per day are ideal but one long walk per day will suffice if you have a large yard.

The Breed Standard is based on that of the Dalmation & was first registered by the South African Kennel Club SAKU (now KUSA) in 1924. At that time KUSA was the only Kennel Club in the territory.

A Rhodesian Ridgebacks uniqueness is the ridge on the back, formed by the hair growing in the opposite direction to the rest of the coat. A strong muscular and active dog, symmetrical outline and capable of great endurance with speed.

A Rhodesian Ridgeback will respond best to fair, firm, and above all, consistent training techniques. You can never afford to make your dog tow the line one day, and the next day let him get away with something "just this once".

In Rhodesian Ridgebacks, you should expect to see health clearances from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals for hips, elbows, and thyroid and from the Canine Eye Registry Foundation (CERF) certifying that the eyes are normal.

The Rhodesian Ridgeback did not, as the name suggests, originate in Rhodesia but in South Africa.

PHYSICAL TRAITS of the RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK
It is strong, fast, with defined muscles and distinguished appearance. Males in this breed stand between 63 and 68 cm, and the females between 61 and 66 cm, have an average weigh 35 kg.

Agility, strength and hardiness could be the Rhodesian Ridgeback middle names. But this dog is not for the average owner. They are very protective of their family and need a good socialization since early ages.

Also keep in mind that a bored Rhodesian Ridgeback can equal a destructive Rhodesian Ridgeback. They should have plenty of toys and should not be left alone for long periods of time on a regular basis. They make excellent hunting companions.

The Rhodesian Ridgeback was named after the country of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), where it was highly valued by the settlers. It was also known as the Lion Dog because it was used in packs to hunt lions.
