Dogs of this type were also known as Roseneath Terriers or White Roseneath Terriers, and in a breed supplement published in 1899, they were classified as a subvariety of the Scottish Terrier.

The Westie was initially called the Poltalloch Terrier and also the Roseneath Terrier after the estate of the Duke of Argyll. Initially registered by the AKC as the Roseneath Terrier the name was changed to the West Highland White Terrier in 1909.

Originally the West Highland White Terrier was called the Roseneath Terrier, after the Scottish estate owned by the Duke of Argyll. This breed share the common traits of all terriers -- spunk, determination and devotion.

Originally the breed was known as Poltalloch Terriers (after the name of Malcolm's home), although they were also known as Roseneath Terriers (after the name of Argyll's home; see Rosneath), White Roseneath Terriers, ...

In 1908, the American Kennel Club registered the breed for the first time as the Roseneath Terrier, but in 1909, the name was altered to West Highland White Terrier.

The West Highland White Terrier has been known by many names, including the Poltalloch Terrier and the Roseneath Terrier, but he was officially recognized by the Kennel Club of England as the West Highland White Terrier in 1906.

Originally registered as Roseneath Terriers, their name was changed to the West Highland White in 1909. Over the years, they have become increasingly popular due to their talents as both hunting dogs and companions.
