The Rough Collie, sometimes called the Scots or Scottish Collie, is still best known as the star of the Lassie films. This breed's ancestors were introduced into Britain from Iceland more than 400 years ago.

The standard Rough Collie is a beautiful animal to behold. This is the classic "Lassie" type of Collie with the magnificent mane of hair that frames the head and chest.

Early Rough Collies were smaller, with broader heads and shorter muzzles. The Collie is so intelligent that he has been trained for many purposes, as a rescue dog, guide for the blind, movie star, and as a guard dog.

As Rough Collies have long hair, they need to be brushed regularly in order to prevent matting, although they do not need extensive care.

Grooming is a necessity for rough collies. Rough coats take some care. A good brushing one a week will take care of many mats and tangles and a bath every two months or so is ok. Smooths are much easier to care for.

It is claimed that t he smooth collie is the same breed as the rough collie; it just doesn’t have the longer coat. The AKC considers the two as varieties of the same breed.

Even though it appears like a miniature version of Rough Collie, it has some differences as well. This agile Sheepdog has a small body that is long in proportion to its height.

Claims have been made that the Rough Collie was crossed with the Borzoi, and the Smooth Collie crossed with Greyhound.

The Shetland Sheepdog bears resemblance to the Rough Collie. Strong, nimble and lightly built the Sheltie is a fast runner and can jump well. Shetland Sheepdog puppies are beguiling and exhibit a desire to please from a very young age.

Both varieties need grooming, but the Rough Collie especially needs regular brushing to keep her coat clean and free of tangles.

The island was already populated by Scottish Rough Collies, but these were bred with a dog called the Yakkin which arrived on the island with Icelandic fishermen. By the 18th century, the Shetland Sheepdog as we know it today was busy guarding sheep.

Most people are familiar with the Rough Collie from the television shows and films of Lassie. The characteristics of a perfect dog are not far from the truth in this well bred family-loving breed.

The Rough Collie has a profuse long, straight harsh outer coat with a soft furry undercoat. The Rough variety also has an abundant mane and feathering on its hindquarters. The Smooth variety has a short harsh outer coat.
