The breed originated in the USSR and Russia as a wolf dog rescue in the late 19th century. The Russian Harlequin Hound is a great scent hound but also makes a nice house companion.

Compared to the Russian Hound, the Harlequin Hound is squarer in frame (22-26 inches in height), has a more loud and melodic bay, and a tricolor coat, white predominant, with a black saddle.
