Russo-European Laika (Russko-Evropeïskaïa Laïka) is the name of a breed of hunting dog that originated in the forested region of northern Europe and Russia, one of several breeds developed from landrace Laika dogs of very ancient Spitz type.

Karelian Bear Dogs are closely related to the Russo-European Laika, also used for the same purpose.
The Karelian Bear Dog closely resembles the Russo-European Laika. It evolved in the part of Finland claimed by the Soviet Union earlier this century.
Despite the erroneous information still out there, the Russo-European Laika is not the same dog as the Karelian Bear Dog. The KBD and the REL are not a result of crossing the original Karelian Bear Dog with a "Utchak sheep dog".
