It is suggested that the Saluki (also known as the Gazelle Hound or Persian Greyhound) may have originated in Syria whence it spread to other Middle Eastern areas and Afghanistan.

Salukis love to run and need regular daily exercise.
They must be kept on leash whenever they're not in a securely fenced area. They have a strong prey drive and will pursue anything furry and in motion, heedless of their owner's commands.

Salukis were first brought into England in 1840 and were known as Persian Greyhounds. There was no real interest however, until the Hon. Florence Amherst imported the first Arabian Saluki in 1895 from the kennels of Prince Abdulla in Transjordania.

Activity: Salukis are a high-energy breed and natural athlete. They require a great deal of exercise. They are not suited for apartment living. Although they are somewhat inactive indoors, it is of vital importance the Saluki be given room to run.

Temperament: Salukis are active, gentle, affectionate, and loyal. They are alert and very interested in hunting. They can be trained, but are not always responsive.

They can do well with older, well behaved children and dogs, particularly other Saluki) if they are socialized from an early age. Early socialization is highly recommended for smaller non-canine pets or they may see them as prey and hunt/chase them.
