(skp´rk), a breed of small nonsporting dog developed in Belgium several hundred years ago. It stands about 13 in. (33 cm) high at the shoulder and weighs from 14 to 18 lb (6.4-8.2 kg).
Schipperkes have a proclivity towards some genetic problems, such as CHD (canine hip dysplasia), epilepsy, cataracts, hyperthyroidism, Legg-Calves-Perthes, PRA (progressive retinal atrophy), and MPS 111B (Mucopolysaccharidosis type IIIB).

A Schipperke can live in just about any environment including an apartment as long as they get ample exercise. They are excellent travelers and do very well on long boat and car rides.
The Schipperke originated in Belgium but is often thought to be a Dutch dog, a confusion that may have arisen because the Netherlands and Belgium are relatively modern countries.
The Schipperke, or "Skip," is a quick, high energy, intensely curious, confident, playful, devoted and loving dog. He bonds very closely with his family and wants to be with you as much as possible.
The Schipperke is an agile, active watchdog and vermin-hunter. It is a small, tailless dog, with a fox-like face and is characterized by its silhouette, which slopes downward from head to rump.
Temperament: Schipperkes are alert, loyal, and curious. They are perky and attentive. Alert and watchful, the Schipperke makes an excellent watchdog. They are courageous.
Training: The Schipperke requires firm yet gentle and consistent training. A very alert and energetic dog, this breed can be difficult to train as they have the tendency to lose interest fairly quickly.
They love to be with their family. If you are looking for a boating companion, the Schipperke's nickname is "little skipper" which says it all. They are very active indoors and outside. They enjoy going for walks or runs.
