Scotch Collies are very multi-purpose. There is one line that is being bred towards a "Squirrel Dog" type, though it still has the traditional look and temperament of the Scotch Collie.

The exact origin of the Scotch Collie is not known, but it is thought that the breed originated thousands of years ago in the Highlands of Scotland and England where they were used as herding dogs for sheep and cattle.

Scotch Collie is the name originally given to the two types now often divided into Rough Collie and Smooth Collie.

However, evidence of the collie is not documented until the 1800s when the breed was known as rough- or smooth-coated Scotch collies.

The historical English Shepherd is known in some areas as the Scotch Collie or "Farm Collie", but in other areas was always considered a distinct breed.

Descended from the British and Scottish "working Collies" (an origin shared with the Border and Scotch Collies and the English Shepherd), the Kelpie was developed to handle the harsh, hot landscape, ...

" Developed from the Scotch Collie, the Border Collie and other working dogs were bred into the mix to create the English Shepherd. They had their start in England and soon transferred to the U.S. by settlers in the early American colonies.

The English Shepherd was known in some places as a Scotch Collie or "Farm Collie". There was no breed club or registry at the time so there is some dispute over exactly which name applies to which dogs.

John's Water Dogs, water spaniels, and possibly Scotch collies were all used to develop the Flat-Coat. He stabilized the wavy or curly-coated retriever and fixed the type of the flat coated retriever.

This early form of the breed was usually referred to as the Scotch collie (or Scottish collie) in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Scotch collies were heavier and less fine-boned than today's rough and smooth dogs.

These dogs became associated with their regions and were later known as Welsh Sheepdogs, Northern Sheepdogs, Highland Collies, Scotch Collies, and so on.

These herding dogs became associated with their particular regions and were eventually known as Welsh Sheepdogs, Northern Sheepdogs, Highland Collies, and Scotch Collies.

Of course the Scotch Collie played a role in the making of this breed as well, and the Sheltie's lovely appearance owes much to this crossing. The Shetland had multiple duties on the Shetland Islands.
