Sheep dogs, or shepherd dogs, are dogs that were specifically bred to help guard and herd sheep. Some of these breeds were better at herding the sheep while others were used for guarding.

Old English Sheep Dog
BACKGROUND
The Old English Sheep Dog was bred to herd and to guard sheep.

The bearded sheep dogs were living in Scotland for several centuries. They were very much valued by shepherds for their durability and excellent ability to graze the livestock (sheep and cows).

In 1860, Scotch Sheep Dogs were shown at the second dog show ever held in England. On a trip to Balmoral a short time later, Queen Victoria saw one of the dogs and became an enthusiast of the breed.

Like the name implies it's a sheep dog, but it was also used as a guard dog and general working dog. When herding, the Icelandic sheepdogs were not mainly used to take the sheep from one point to another.

One of the theories is that the Sarplaninac dog originated form the ancient MOLOSSER sheep dogs of ancient Epirus. These are ancient Tribes that lived in the Balkan Peninsula.

The Puli (Pulik plural) is an ancient breed of Hungarian sheep dog, medium-sized, sturdy with a unique, corded coat. A full adult coat can reach to the ground. Some colors are not permitted in some countries but, in the U.K.

I have two purebred Shetland Sheep Dogs, a male named Rascal and a female rescue Sheltie named Chloe. They are smart, energetic and mild tempered, good with children too.

The breed is named for the duchy of Pomerania, northern Germany, where, in the early 19th century, it is said to have been bred down in size from a 30-pound (13.5 kilogram) sheep dog. They were bred down from imports in Britain over 100 years ago.

It has been suggested that around 1514 some Polish Sheep Dogs were brought to Scotland where they were eventually bred with the Highland Collie, and this was the foundation of what we know today as the Bearded Collie.

The Australian Kelpie is an Australian sheep dog that has proven very successful at herding and droving with little or no command guidance in Australia and in the mountainous areas of New Zealand.

Great Pyrenees are a sheep dog that are well known for their abilities to keep sheep well guarded, protected and for their herding skills.

The Schapendoes is a medium sized, shaggy breed, also known as the Dutch Sheep Dog. This shaggy herding dog originated in Holland and has existed for centuries.

It is said that in 1875 Baxque sheep herders began to migrate to the United States bringing their sheep dogs with them. At that time the breed developed into the Australian Shepherd.

Records show that classes for "Scotch Sheep Dogs" were held at the Birmingham Dog Society in 1860, and it is believed that Queen Victoria was enamored of the breed after she first saw a border collie while on a trip to Balmoral.
