The Sheltie is not a dwarf, toy, or miniature dog as some names may imply.
Appearance:
Body: Small, well-proportioned and fine-boned with a strong, level, well-muscled, back, sloping shoulders, deep chest, and well-sprung ribs.

Activities
Shelties are active dogs that enjoy a large amount of exercise. However, they do not need as much structured activity time as the Collie, and can be content as a more sedentary companion.

Training: The Sheltie is very easy to train and does very well in obedience and herding given the right methods and trainer. Having a human like intelligence, Shetland Sheepdogs are willing to obey, and very eager to do so.

The Shetland sheepdog, also known as the Sheltie, is named after the island where he originated in the 1700s. Resembling a stocky miniature collie, the Sheltie is a very loyal and loving companion and makes a wonderful family pet.

Temperament
The Shetland Sheepdog is an outstanding companion dog and is intensely loyal. It is lively, intelligent, trainable, and willing to please and obey.

Shelties have a long life expectancy, living between 12 and 16 years. They don’t have many health problems, however their miniaturisation has led to some ailments.

Shelties retain a strong herding instinct. You'll find that your Sheltie will enthusiastically chase and try to "herd" squirrels, rabbits, and children, running around them, barking, and nipping.

Shelties, like Australian Cattle dogs, are bred for herding and are more often used for herding sheep than cattle. Shetland Sheepdogs require regular exercise to keep from getting bored.

Shelties grow 13-16 inches high and about 14-27 pounds, states the race info center. The Sheltie is quick with his face wedged-shaped, double coat, almond-shaped eyes, flat skull, easy gait, long hair and gray, blue and black coat merle distinguished.

Shelties must have a broad skull, a more clear "stop" (the transition from forehead to the muzzle). Sheltie's eyes are slightly larger in size, than in Collie's. Shelties have a shorter neck, but still long enough to hold them head high.

Shelties have a reputation as vocal dogs, but that might be undeserved. Ill-bred dogs often display a terrier-like personality-hyper and yappy, always on the go-but can just as easily be overly timid and may become a fear-biter.

Shelties are susceptible to progressive retinal atrophy and Collie eye anomaly, two eye diseases that cause blindness. Buyers should search for breeders who test for these diseases.

(Sheltie) The Shetland Sheepdog looks like a miniature Collie. Their head is extremely small and round with a long, narrow muzzle. Their large, round eyes are usually dark brown color, and their mouths close into a scissor bite.

My Sheltie was (and in spirit still is) the love of my life. She was bright, energetic (a tad neurotic but c'mon - so am I so how can I complain ). They are the most loyal, loving precious creatures ever put on this earth.

The Sheltie is the epitome of a family pet. It is gentle, bright, loyal, and friendly. It is obedient and playful, making it great for a family with children, however it may nip at heels during play.

The Sheltie is energetic, but its exercise needs can be met with a good walk, short jog or active game and training session. It can live outdoors in a temperate climate, but it is strongly advised that the Sheltie be a house dog.

Our Sheltie, Laddie, will be 13 in November. His arthritis had slowed him down so much he didn't want to go walking with me as much as usual. And when he did go walking, he didn't go far before he wanted to go back home.

The Shetland Sheepdog, or "Sheltie," is a sweet, loving, intensely loyal, active and busy dog who is eager to work and play with you. He is sensitive and affectionate, and seems able to read your moods, and he has a powerful desire to please you.
