The smallest of all native Japanese breeds, the Shiba Inu originated in Japan where they were used to hunt small game, boar, and bear. The small dog weighs between 17 and 23 pounds and stands at 13 to 17 inches tall.

Shiba Inu are fearless characters, affectionate to their owners, but somewhat aloof with strangers. They seem to be unaware of their size in the scheme of things and can be a little territorial and possessive by nature.

The Shiba Inu is an athletic, independent, confident, fearless and lively dog. He is affectionate and good-natured with those he knows, but aloof and reserved with strangers.

The Shiba Inu is an ancient breed associated with the Prefectures of Gifu, Toyama, and Nagano in central Japan, and the name, in fact, means "little dog" in the Nagano dialect.

The Shiba Inu possesses typical traits of dogs of northern origin such as small erect ears, powerful body thick (red) fur, and curled tail. It has a moderately compact and slightly long body and a good-natured, bold, and spirited expression.

The Shiba Inu’s ancestors were brought to Japan, where the breed officially originated, from China about two thousands years ago. Its ancestors spawned six other breeds of dog, including the Akita and the Shiba Inu.

The Shiba Inu is brave, loving, and independent. They are very charming, and are reserved but non-aggressive with strangers. They develop a strong bond with their handlers and do well with children.
