Shika Inus contain several breeds of Japanese dogs, including the Kai, Kishu, and Shikoku. Other breeds similar to the Kai are the Ainu and Shiba Inu, from which this breed could have descended or been an ancestor.
The breed originated in Japan from the cross breeding of Shika Inus with the smooth-coated Phu Quoc Dog. The Sanshu Dog was used as a guard and companion dog, while today they simply make a dedicated family pet.
