Shikoku Average: 5 (1 vote) The breed is a primitive, native Japanese breed that originated on the Shikoku Islands. It is closely related to the Shiba Inu. The medium-sized Spitz type Shikoku weighs 35 to 55 pounds and stands 17 to 21 inches tall.
Shikokus have a thick, double coat, erect ears, a curled tail, compact feet, and has sharper features than some other Japanese breeds. Like Akitas, the Shikoku has a scissor bite. Their eyes are dark brown, almond shaped and slanted.

Shikokus are good watchdogs or training dogs. Their family is very important to them, and they always want love and affection. They do well with children if socialized with them. Strangers are usually ignored by Shikokus but not attacked.

History The Shiba Inu originated in Japan along with the Akita, Shikoku, Kai Dog, Hokkaido and Kishu, all of which are larger than the Shiba Inu. The Shiba Inu was used primarily as a hunting dog to flush out small game and birds for hunters.
Developed in 19th century Japan, the Tosa (also called the Tosa Inu and the Japanese Mastiff) derived from a cross between the large, Spitz-like Shikoku dogs of Japan and several large European breeds including the Mastiff and the Bulldog.

The big guys are the Akitas; the middle group includes Kishu, Hokkaido, Shikoku, and Kai, all extremely rare in the US. The smallest of the six, the Shiba yields nothing in courage or tenacity to his larger cousins.
