The Smooth Collie is identical to the Rough Collie except in coat, that of the Smooth being short and flat, with a harsh-textured top coat and a very dense undercoat.

The Smooth Collie is more popular as a companion dog in Great Britain than in the United States, though he is gaining popularity in the U.S. today. The Smooth Collie is the same as the Rough Collie, but without the long coat.

The smooth collie likewise has a double coat, but the outer one is short and dense, albeit there is a notable ruff around the neck. Both rough and smooth varieties are available in four distinct colors.

Blue Heelers are derived largely from dingoes using the puppies they brought back, normally the old Smooth Collie bred. It is believed that Dalmatians and Bull Terrier experienced been also additional to create the breed.

It is claimed that t he smooth collie is the same breed as the rough collie; it just doesn’t have the longer coat. The AKC considers the two as varieties of the same breed.

Temperament: Rough and Smooth Collies are intelligent, gentile, social and friendly. Some tend to nip at the heels in play, but they are generally well-behaved. Collies love to play. They are sensitive, devoted, gentle and willing to please.

The Smooth Collie is more active and athletic than the Rough-coated variety - although you can get both varieties in the same litter. Collie puppies need to be thoroughly socialized in order to build confidence.

Originally developed to herd cattle on large ranches, the Australian Cattle Dog was constructed from a mix of breeds like the Smithfield and the Old Smooth Collie.
