Smooth Dachshund

Smooth Dachshund Breed information’s speaks of the Smooth Dachshund as very popular in the United States both in apartment and urban dwelling. Why are they popular?

Smooth Dachshund
Coat-Short, smooth and shining. Should be neither too long nor too thick. Ears not leathery. Tail-Gradually tapered to a point, well but not too richly haired.

Smooth Dachshunds are the most popular variety in the United States. Their coats are short and shiny and need little grooming. They do, however, need a sweater in the winter if you live in an area with cold weather.

The smooth Dachshund probably was the original, with longhairs either a result of mutation and selective breeding or of crossbreeding, perhaps with a German spaniel.

It is also possible that smooth dachshunds were later crossed with spaniels and the German stoberhund (a gun dog) to produce the longhaired variety.

Coat: Smooth Dachshund: Short, smooth and shining; Wirehaired Dachshund: tight, short, thick, rough, hard, outer coat;finer, shorter undercoat; Longhaired Dachshund: sleek, glosssy, ...

Meanwhile, the long-haired version is thought to have been the result of crossbreeding between the smooth Dachshund, the German Stoberhund and spaniels.

Country of Origin: Germany - Bred for several hundred years, stemming from the German Pinscher possibly by crossing it with the Italian Greyhound and the Smooth Dachshund.

Longhaired Dachshunds tend to be the quietest and sweetest-natured (probably stemming from their spaniel heritage).
Smooth Dachshunds are most apt to attach themselves to one person and are often more aloof with strangers.
