The name Squirrel Spaniel also has been used, most likely referring to an earlier standard in which the tail set is described as "curling over the back as a squirrel's.
At one time the papillon was known as the squirrel spaniel because he carried his plumed tail over his back in the same way a squirrel does. These early dogs had drooping ears, but through some unknown event, some dogs sported erect ears.
It was even once called the Squirrel Spaniel because of the way it carried it tail above its back, just as a squirrel does.
For this reason the Papillon was once called a Squirrel Spaniel. Its long lustrous coat is white with patches of any color, except liver. The butterfly ears are carried either erect or drooping.
There was a time when the Papillon was called the Squirrel Spaniel because of the rөsemblance it had to а squirrel as it carried its tail over the back when it walked, just like a squirrel does.
Another name given to the breed was Squirrel Spaniel, as it bore its plumed tail on its back in the manner of squirrels. In Europe, the Papillon is known as the Continental Toy Spaniel or Epagneul Nain.
