Staghounds should wear a basket type muzzle when running off leash (alone or with other animals)? ....alone, because you never know when someone else's dog is going to come running out of nowhere....
Staghounds are very calm and affectionate, making wonderful companion dogs in addition to their tracking abilities. Even with their great size, they are not often trained as watchdogs.

When European Boer settlers arrived in South Africa in the 16th and 17th centuries, they brought with them such breeds as the Mastiff, Great Dane, Bloodhound, Pointer, Staghound and Greyhound, among others.
