The Schnauzer (referred to by some as the ‘Standard Schnauzer') was the first of the three Schnauzer breeds with both the Miniature and Giant Schnauzers evolving from this rugged little dog.

The Miniature Schnauzer was bred down from the Standard Schnauzer. (There is also a Giant Schnauzer, which was produced by breeding the Standard Schnauzer with larger breeds.) Breeds crossed with the Standard include the Affenpinscher and the Poodle.

One of three modern breeds with schnauzer in its name, the Miniature Schnauzer is descended from the Standard Schnauzer and the Affenpinscher, a toy dog with a terrier-like attitude, with perhaps a dollop of Poodle thrown in.

Overview: The Miniature Schnauzer is a cross between the Standard Schnauzer, the Affenpinscher, and it is said the Poodle is a possibility.

These animals did not become a separate breed from the Standard Schnauzer until 1899 when Germany finally recognized them as being separate. They were first found in Germany in 1800s and were being used as ratters and farm dogs.

He is descended from Standard Schnauzers who were crossed with Affenpinschers and Poodles, as well as with smaller Schnauzers.

Miniaturization of Standard Schnauzers
During the 1800's, German breeders set about changing their beloved Standard Schnauzers down to a more manageable size for house pets, and so Miniature Schnauzers came to be.

How tall would a miniature and a standard schnauzer mix be?
Question by asdf: How tall would a miniature schnauzer and a standard schnauzer mix be?

The Giant Schnauzer was developed around the 1800s by farmers of the Bavaria region who liked the standard Schnauzer, but needed a dog with more power to drive the cattle.

The original is commonly known as the Standard Schnauzer. It is the middle-sized Schnauzer and stands between 43 and 49 cms at the shoulders. The bitches being on the lower end of the scale and the dogs being on the upper end.

The breed is not a purebred dog, but a hybrid or designer mix that is the result of crossing an Airedale Terrier with a Standard Schnauzer. The weight of a Schnairedale varies widely, from 30 to 90 pounds.
