The Sussex Spaniel is one of the earliest developed spaniel breeds (recognised as such since 1790) but unfortunately is one of the rarest.

There is evidence that the Sussex Spaniel appears to have been evident in the UK in the 1800's. During the first half of the 19th century, a Mr Fuller of Rosehill Sussex (England) is credited with being their founder of the Sussex Spaniel.

Additionally, small dogs from Sussex Spaniel litters were called cockers. (Kolehouse) In 1874 the first stud books were published by the newly formed kennel club.
