The Tervueren is a member of the pastoral group. They were originally used for herding livestock; today they are used in the protection services, as assistance dogs and as companions.

Like all Belgian Shepherds, the Tervueren is a medium-sized, hard-working, square-proportioned dog in the sheepdog family. Males stand between 24 and 26 inches, and weigh approximately 65 lbs. Females are finer and smaller.

The Belgian Tervueren is a well balanced medium size dog, elegant in appearance, standing squarely on all fours. A picture of power and grace. He is intelligent, courageous, alert and devoted to his master.

Many people enjoy owning mixed breeds, valuing their unique appearance and characteristics; while dogs of some breeds, such as the Tervueren, exhibit little variability of appearance, mixed-breed dogs exhibit often unique appearances.

There are four varieties of Belgian Shepherds, the black long coated Groenendael, long coated Tervueren, short coated Malinois and the wiry coated, and rarest of the four, the Laekenois.

The fact that this breed is still not recognized in the USA, while his cousins, Malinois, Tervueren and Groenendael, have their own standard, doesn’t help either.

The Belgian Tervuren (terv-YER-en) is longhaired and fawn/mahogany. An alternate spelling is Tervueren.
The Belgian Malinois (MAL-in-wah) is shorthaired and fawn/mahogany.

Thus the Parc du Laeken section of Brussels gave rise to the Laekenois; and the Malines region was home to the Malinois; and the town of Tervueren perfected the Tervuren.

Nevertheless, the Barbet is rated as the number 4 agility dog in France, just ahead of the Tervueren, one of four varieties of Belgian Shepherd Dogs.
